One of the highlights at Bauer booth during bauma 2025 was the eRG 21 T hybrid pile driver from RTG Rammtechnik. The machine’s drive system combines the power of a 430 kW diesel engine with the precision of an electric motor delivering up to 88 kW of additional power (standard power supply: 125 A / 400 V).

\n\n

This hybrid technology ensures a constant high level of efficiency, even under strict emission regulations. Thanks to the support of the electric motor, the diesel engine operates with less power, which not only reduces noise significantly but also minimises fuel consumption. As a result, CO2 emissions can be cut by up to 68%.

\n\n

The system seamlessly adjusts between diesel and electric power based on demand, optimising performance for various applications. When lower power is required, the machine can even operate in fully electro-hydraulic mode. Meanwhile, full power is available for demanding piling tasks.

\n\n

The standard equipment for the eRG 21 T hybrid includes the Bauer comfort operator cabin and a modern touchscreen with B-Tronic control. Integrated power management optimises the use of the hybrid drive. The temperature-regulated fan control system with fully automatic operation has been specially developed for vibrator operation. Additionally, the machine features a basic remote control as well as retractable side flaps for automatic noise protection.

\n\n

A variety of optional features allow customisation for specific requirements. An arctic kit or the extended arctic kit plus, for example, enable operation under extreme weather conditions. An optional second swivelling mechanism increases the swivel braking torque, improving machine control. The energy-efficient power (EEP) system with Eco Mode further helps reduce energy consumption. An extended remote control (operation) and automatic coupling system for the base machine (ACS I) and all attachments (ACS II) are also available.

\n\n

The hybrid drive has already demonstrated its reliability with the eRG 19 T hybrid, the ‘smaller sister’ of the eRG 21 T hybrid. Last year, it was used successfully at the Friedrich-Krause-Ufer site in Berlin, Germany. During the special foundation engineering work for a new office and commercial building, the machine executed vibration driving precisely based on a grid pattern, laying the groundwork for an excavation pit with a stable sealing horizon.

RTG Rammtechnik GmbH, a member of Bauer Maschinen Group, has developed a track-bound drilling rig and pile driver in collaboration with Leipzig-based company Techne and with the assistance of Hering Bau GmbH & Co KG.

\n\n

According to Bauer, in the future, this equipment will make it possible to implement foundation types and depths that previously seemed unviable for the track.

\n\n

The overall system is comprised primarily of the base carrier with leader based on an RTG RG 18 S, one flat carriage to support the leader, and another flat carriage for the transport and setup of the attachment parts. When the leader is raised, the equipment reaches a constructional height of approximately 23 m.

\n\n

The leader has a main winch with 170 kN, a pull-down winch with 200 kN, and an auxiliary winch with 55 kN. A mast inclination of 5° in all directions can be achieved during operation to compensate the formation level.

\n\n

In addition, the leader can be swiveled by 90° around the axis of the telescoping arm on either side, so it can always be brought into the desired operating position with respect to the upper carriage. The leader arm can be telescoped up to 2 m. The connection is bolted hydraulically. The telescopic boom allows rapid and precise positioning at the operating point.

\n\n

This new machine has a transport length of roughly 15 m and operates on a track width of 1,435 mm. The transport weight is below 110 t, which enables transport without approval. The upper carriage protrudes a maximum of 1.55 m from the track axis, which means that traffic can continue on the adjacent track.

\n\n

Between the leader and the main equipment, only the hydraulic lines are permanently connected in transport position. This concept enables transport as a normal railway vehicle. The connection between the telescopic arm and leader is bolted and then loosened for transport and storing the leader, or tightened for mounting the leader. In transport position, the equipment height is less than 4.30 m.

\n\n

From pile construction to the installation of sheet pile walls, to soil mixing techniques and soil improvement, all methods that are possible with a conventional RG pile driver can be implemented within a wide work front of more than 9 m from the track axis. The base carrier allows for continuous rotation of 360° around the upper carriage axis. The operator can control all functions of the upper carriage and undercarriage from the operator’s cab.

\n\n

Furthermore, all operating functions of the machine can be controlled from the outside using a wireless remote control. As a result, the operator does not necessarily have to remain in the operator’s cab. This facilitates handling under restricted or difficult operating conditions.

\n\n

“A track-bound machine with these specific performance characteristics is unique on the world market,” said Bernhard Lindermair, managing director of RTG Rammtechnik GmbH. “In addition, the equipment can be used during shutdowns, as setup and operation is possible with an installed overhead line. The first client-owned equipment will be implemented at a jobsite in March 2023.”

In mid-2021, Bauer Maschinen Group brought its first drilling rig with an electric drive on the market, the eBG 33. Now the company has opened up another chapter in electrification and launched the new, fully battery-powered version of its electric drilling rigs – the eBG 33 H all electric.

\n\n

With the additional electrification of the main consumers such as the rotary drive and main winch, the new machine defines new standards for energy efficiency. This new eBG model relies on a completely new generation of the B-Tronic control and visualisation system, the B-Tronic 5, with innovative solutions in human-machine interaction and additional functions in the area of data management.

\n\n

In addition, Bauer’s subsidiary RTG Rammtechnik GmbH has unveiled its new RG 19 T hybrid. The system capacity is achieved with a diesel engine and an additional electric drive, which considerably reduces the CO2 and noise emissions.

\n\n

With this new model, RTG is setting standards in the telescopic leader segment. All RG models on the BS 55 RS and BS 65 RS base carriers can be offered with this hybrid technology in the future. The ‘operate’ remote control is also available in the hybrid version. The new RTG Pile Driver app allows the operator to handle the machine quickly and safely. Moreover, a complete service can be carried out on the equipment with the help of the app.

\n\n

Bauer’s subsidiary Klemm Bohrtechnik GmbH also offers its electric model – the KR 806-3E – which features proven technology from the KR 806-3GS rig, however as an electrohydraulic, emission-free variant. The intelligent control system enables the use of batteries as a booster for drilling operation to reduce the required electricity load. Compared to the diesel-hydraulic variant, there are no restrictions when it comes to power and application.

RTG Rammtechnik GmbH, a company of Bauer Maschinen Group, has been actively developing new features for its RG telescopic leaders. Among them is a sheet pile assistance system integrated in the vibrator, which enhances safety and efficiency of the construction of sheet pile walls.

\n\n

Previously, a sheet pile was attached to the vibrator with a chain, pulled upwards and then threaded into the grip by moving the vibrator downwards, explained RTG. During this process, the chain was loosened, with the sheet piles standing freely on the ground and potentially able to tip over before being threaded in.

\n\n

Thanks to the new assistance system, it is now possible to safely thread a sheet pile into the vibrator by fixing the sheet pile (single or double pile) in place between the ground and the assistant, thereby preventing it from tipping over. “Two factors play a role here: first, the increased safety on construction sites, and second, the time saved by eliminating laborious manual threading,” said Jonas Guettel, RTG product manager.

\n\n

The assistance system has been applied in multiple applications, such as the construction of an underground garage in the German city of Berlin last year. Here, an RG 19T with integrated sheet pile assistant was deployed. The job involved securing a slope, and then later the excavation pit, using double U profiles with a length of 12 m. According to RTG, by adopting an RG 19T with the new system, threading in the sheet piles took just a fraction of the time that was previously needed (when an RG without assistant was used). The sheet pile walls only required slight preparation.

\n\n

For a project in Karlsruhe, Germany, double U sheet piles with a length of 18 m had to be positioned for a new building complex with multiple underground floors. “During this project, the RG was operated by a highly experienced operator who was visibly impressed by the massive amount of time saved,” said Mr Guettel.

\n\n

In 2020, RTG presented its ‘operation remote control,” which is considered a world’s first in the field of telescopic leaders. This new tool, available for all RTG equipment, enables the operator to control all functions externally – from set-up and drilling to impact driving. In the process, the B-Tronic is displayed on the attachable touch screen.

\n\n

“Using remote control, the entire set-up process can be carried out by a single person in just about 15 minutes,” revealed Mr Guettel. This makes one-man operation possible, resulting in considerable safety improvements, particularly on cramped construction sites, said RTG. The sheet pile assistant can also be operated by remote control.

\n\n

RTG added that the new auxiliary winch for RG telescopic leaders is hydraulically adjustable, meaning that a range of positions can be achieved (three working positions and one transport position). It also allows the load capacity to be optionally increased to 8 t, eliminating the need for additional lifting equipment.

\n\n

“In all our new developments, we are careful to ensure that they are not only effective in practice but also intuitive to operate,” summarised Mr Guettel. “The feedback we have received so far from operators after the first applications – some of them relatively new and some of them highly experienced – demonstrates that our innovations offer real added value in terms of safety and efficiency for the construction of sheet pile walls.”
